Big South Announces Softball Players of the Week - March 23

Peyton Bryden (Victoria, British Columbia) has been named the Big South Softball Player of the Week, while USC Upstate’s
Maddie Drerup (Fort Mill, S.C.) is the Pitcher of the Week honoree for games played March 16-22, it was announced today. In addition, Winthrop outfielder
Rebecca Amos (Walnut Cove, N.C.) is the Freshman of the Week recipient.
Bryden led the Eagles with a .500 average (7-14) with two runs scored, six RBI, a .533 on-base percentage and .643 slugging clip in four games. She started the week with a hit and RBI against Coastal Carolina, then opened the Gardner-Webb series with a 3-4 day, a run scored and three RBI. Bryden clubbed a two-run double in the bottom of the second and later provided an insurance run with an RBI single for a 7-3 lead. In the second contest, she tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI single, and then broke a tie in the bottom of the sixth with another RBI single. In the series finale, Bryden put a runner in scoring position that eventually scored with a double as the Eagles swept the Runnin’ Bulldogs for the first time since 2022.
Drerup went 3-0 in the circle along with a save in four appearances, as she tossed 24.0 innings and struck out 13 with a 3.28 earned run average. She opened her week with a complete game win over Furman, in which she tallied four strikeouts. In the Spartans’ Big South opener against preseason favorite Radford, Drerup shutout the Highlanders in a 1-0, nine-inning victory as she scattered seven hits and fanned three hitters. She then saved game two with a strikeout in her lone inning of the 3-1 win. Drerup wrapped her weekend with a complete game win with a season-high tying five strikeouts, and finished the Radford series with a 2-0 mark, one save, 2.06 ERA and nine total K’s.
Amos hit .357 (5-14) with three runs scored, an RBI and a triple. She batted .500 in Winthrop’s three-game sweep of Gardner-Webb, where she opened the series 2-3 with a run and RBI. In game two, Amos hit a leadoff triple and scored on the next batter to cut the Gardner-Webb lead to 2-1. In the final game, she was 2-3 with a run, as she led off the first inning with a walk and then eventually scored on a sac fly for a 1-0 lead in a game the Eagles would go onto win, 3-2.
