New Leaders Emerge Following Second Round of Big South Men's Golf Championship
FRIPP ISLAND, S.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) –
Presbyterian College and
High Point each finished at even-par 284 on Tuesday to move up the team leaderboard and hold first-place and second-place, respectively, following the second round of the Big South Men's Golf Championship. PC moved up one spot and is at 2-under 566, while the Panthers jumped from their opening round fifth-place tie into second at 3-over 571. In addition, Charleston Southern's
Dewi John used a 3-under day while Longwood's
Matthew Hartley was 2-under to enter the clubhouse with a share of the 36-hole lead at 5-under 137. The Championship is being contested at Ocean Creek Golf Course (par 71, 6,546 yards) on Fripp Island, S.C.
USC Upstate and
Longwood are tied for third-place at 5-over 573, with
Winthrop and
Gardner-Webb each one stroke behind at 6-over 574.
Radford and
Charleston Southern are tied for seventh at 9-over 577. Just 11 strokes separate the eight teams -- including a gap of just four shots from the fourth position. The top four team finishers after 54-holes of stroke play advance to Wednesday’s Match Play Semifinals & Championship.
John moved up four spots on the individual leaderboard as he wrapped his final nine holes with five birdies and two pars. Hartley opened his round with three consecutive birdies and was 3-under through 11 holes before suffering two bogeys in a four-hole stretch. He birdied his final hole to join John at the top. Jeep Patrick of Presbyterian was 2-under on Tuesday and is tied with first round leader
Alec Prentice of USC Upstate for third-place at 3-under 139. Gardner-Webb's
Jack Boyer is solo fifth at 2-over 140, with four players behind him at 1-under 141. Hartley, John and Patrick are pacing the tournament field with 10 birdies each, while John is tied with Presbyterian's
Spence Hagood at -6 on the par-5 layouts after two rounds.
Monday's round also featured Winthrop's
Waymon Thomas making an ace on the 151-yard par-3 No. 12 hole -- the third hole-in-one on that particular hole in three years of Men's Golf Championship play on the Ocean Creek Golf Course.
