High Point Maintains Lead in Big South Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championships
HIGH POINT, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Five-time defending champion
High Point extended its lead at the 2026 Big South Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships following the second day of competition at Vert Stadium on the campus of High Point University. The Panthers are in front with 140 team points through nine scored events, with
Gardner-Webb in second-place at 67 points.
Charleston Southern is in third-place with 56 points.
Two of the four champions crowned on Tuesday set Championship Meet records in their respective victories. Gardner-Webb’s
Quentin Peterson repeated as the shot put champion, and surpassed his own Meet record in the process with a throw of 19.60m -- which also established the overall Big South record. High Point’s
Cole Wilson became just the second-ever three-time decathlon champion in league history, as he won with 7,777 points -- eclipsing his own Meet record set last year. Wilson led a trio of Panther decathletes on the medal stand, as
Nigel Steenwinkel (7,261) was second, followed by
David Caivano (6,483) in third.
Gardner-Webb’s
Donovan Richardson became the program’s first-ever Big South triple jump champion, as he placed first with a leap of 14.74m. UNC Asheville’s
Jan Málek captured his second consecutive 3,000m Steeplechase title with a winning time of 9:07.21.
Meanwhile, the following individuals posted the top qualifying times in preliminary events on Tuesday ahead of tomorrow’s finals: Charleston Southern’s
Aden Price (400m – 46.56), Charleston Southern’s
Laden Beckwith (100m – 10.33), and High Point’s
Camerin Williams (800m – 1:49.02).
The Big South Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships conclude Wednesday, May 13, from Vert Stadium, with ESPN+ coverage beginning at 2:00pm. High Point will attempt to become just the second Big South men’s program to win six consecutive titles.
