DALLAS, Texas -- After leading the NCAA in both total RBI and RBI per game for games played between April 27 and May 3, USC Upstate baseball's fifth-year senior designated hitter Johnny Sweeney added an additional accolade to his weekly haul, being named National Hitter of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Monday, Sweeney earned his fourth career Big South Conference Player of the Week nod.

The Millstadt, Ill. native homered and drove home four-plus RBI in all three games of the Spartans' series with Gardner-Webb, finishing the weekend slashing .500/.467/1.214. His homer in game two against the Runnin' Bulldogs, a grand slam, marked the 31st of his Upstate career, breaking a tie with former teammate Grant Sherrod (2022-24) for the program's Division I era (2007-pres.) career record. Reaching double-digit homers on the season, Sweeney became the fifth Spartan in program history with multiple double-digit home run seasons, following up on his 18-homer campaign last season.
