Big South Announces Women's Soccer Players of the Week - Aug. 24

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – High Point forward Sabba Haghgoo (Crofton, Md.) has been named the Big South Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Longwood’s Berni Wayland (West Linn, Ore.) is the Defensive Player of the Week for matches played Aug. 17-23, it was announced today.  In addition, Charleston Southern midfielder Nina Meyer (Stillwater, Minn.) has been selected as the Freshman of the Week.
 
Haghgoo recorded a milestone three-goal performance against Marshall, scoring all three goals in a 4-0 victory over the Thundering Herd. The junior opened the scoring with a left-footed finish in the 12th minute before adding her second in the 18th minute after the Marshall goalkeeper came out of the box, allowing Haghgoo to take possession and finish into an open net. She completed the hat trick in the 56th minute, sliding to finish an assisted ball from midfield. Haghgoo put four of her five shots on goal against Marshall and totaled eight shots on the week, including three in a 2-2 draw at East Carolina (one on goal).
 
Wayland anchored a Longwood backline that limited American to just two shots, including one on goal, as the Lancers blanked the Eagles, 3-0, on Sunday. The junior defender helped hold American without a shot through the opening 45 minutes before the Eagles finally recorded their first attempt in the 64th minute. Wayland played all 90 minutes, helping Longwood earn its first win of the season.
 
Meyer burst onto the scene for Charleston Southern, recording her first collegiate goal, assist and multi-goal game in a 9-1 win over Columbia College. The freshman scored twice in the 28th and 59th minutes while also assisting on the Buccaneers’ fourth goal in the 27th minute, all coming in just her third career game. Meyer started both matches on the week, totaling 71 minutes against Columbia after playing 45 minutes in a 3-2 loss to Central Michigan.

Also nominated for Defensive Player of the Week: Abril Montiel (Gardner-Webb), Mirshafiei Nylah (High Point), Lyla Chadd (Presbyterian) and Mia Ruffalo (Winthrop).
