Maya Bukovcan (Ottawa, Ontario) has been selected the Big South Volleyball Player of the Week for matches played the opening weekend of the 2026 season, it was announced today. In addition, teammate
Remy Catojo (Winnipeg, Manitoba) is the Setter of the Week, while USC Upstate’s
Sophia Overholt (Tryon, N.C.) was voted the Libero of the Week. Spartans’ right side hitter
Sophia Spivey (Kissimmee, Fla.) was selected Freshman of the Week.
Bukovcan was named to the Penn State Invitational All-Tournament team as she started all three matches and played all 14 sets with 3.21 points per set, 31 kills (2.21 per set) and 20 blocks (1.43 per set). Bukovcan tallied 11 kills against both Hofstra and Penn State while posting her first collegiate double-double with 10 blocks against PSU -- helping the Panthers take two sets against the No. 10-ranked Nittany Lions. She hit .421 with nine kills in the opening match of the season, a five-set win over UConn, and added 10 digs and three service aces across the three contests.
Catojo dished out 96 assists (7.38 per set) in 13 sets played last weekend. She compiled a weekend-high 38 assists against both UConn (3-2 win) and Penn State (five-set loss), added 12 kills on the attack -- including five against Hofstra for a .333 hitting percentage. Catojo collected 16 digs and 12 blocks during the weekend, with a season-high five blocks vs. Penn State.
Overholt helped the Spartans to a 2-1 opening weekend with 63 digs (4.85 per set) as she recorded at least 17 digs in all three matches. She opened the campaign with a weekend-high 24 digs in Upstate’s 3-2 win over Old Dominion. Overholt followed with 22 digs (5.50 per set) in a 3-1 victory at Norfolk State, where she contributed eight assists and a service ace. Against St. John’s, Overholt tallied 17 digs over four sets along with three service aces.
Spivey hit .262 with 26 kills (2.36 kills per set) plus 11 digs, four total blocks, one service ace and 29.0 total points in her first collegiate action. At Old Dominion, she helped the Spartans earn a five-set victory with six kills, six digs and three block assists. At Norfolk State, Spivey had a weekend-high 18 kills on just 29 attacks with only one error for a .586 hitting percentage. She also added five digs, one service ace and a block assist as part of her 19.5 point afternoon against NSU.
