Winthrop Yields Two Second Half Goals, Falls To Appalachian State
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The men’s soccer team yielded two goals in the final 14 minutes to suffer a 2-1 loss to Appalachian State in its season opener at the 2005 JAKO/GWU Classic.
The Eagles got on the board first as freshman Daniel Revivo scored his first career goal in the 18th minute. Revivo headed in a Kevin Green service off a corner kick for the goal. Revivo had a chance to put Winthrop up by two goals, but was unable to convert a one-on-one with the keeper as his shot sailed wide.
In the second half, the Eagles had another chance to go up by two goals as Michael Chumah broke free down the right side, but his last touch was too strong and he was unable to get a good shot off as George Nagle closed in to make the save.
Winthrop’s defense broke down in the 76th minute as a long ball got over the top and Tate Parrish was able to slip the ball by Andy Reid to tie the game. Nearly 10 minutes later the Mountaineers scored the game-winner off a corner kick. J.T. Labruyere headed the ball past Reid at the back-post off a cross from Sean Sassano.
“I was pleased with the effort from the 12 players we had available for the game. At the end of the day the result is what counts and we let one slip away. I think with the humidity, we broke down physically and mentally and made two costly errors in the final 15 minutes of the game which led to both of their goals.”
The loss was the third straight to the Mountaineers, all of which have been decided by one goal.
Winthrop looks to rebound as it returns to action on Saturday at the 2005 JAKO/GWU Classic to take on East Carolina at 4 p.m.
