CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – In conjunction with the 2015 VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Basketball Championships, ESPN college basketball analyst Brooke Weisbrod, the 2001 Big South Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Year, will speak at Coastal Carolina University on Wednesday, March 4 at 12:30pm as part of a special luncheon in Adkins Fieldhouse.

The lecture has been made possible by Terri DeCenzo, Coastal’s first lady and the executive director of Women in Philanthropy and Leadership for Coastal Carolina University, and reflects the Conference-wide commitment to Developing Leaders Through Athletics with particular emphasis on women’s leadership.  This is the third annual Women’s Speaker Program, as former NBA executive Susan O’Malley was the inaugural presenter in 2013 and Chamique Holdsclaw was last year’s speaker.

“I can’t think of a better way to celebrate Big South Tournament week than having a Big South alumnae such as Brooke address student-athletes from around the league,” said Matt Hogue, Interim Director of Athletics at Coastal Carolina University.  “Not only has she cultivated a tremendous broadcasting career, but I know she will provide a special inspiration to Big South women’s basketball players because her story started in the arenas of this league.  I would also like to personally thank Mrs. Terri DeCenzo and the CCU Office of Women in Philanthropy and Leadership for making this program possible and for the continuous support they provide to help women achieve their career and life goals.”

Weisbrod began her broadcasting career with ESPN Regional in 2004 as a women’s basketball analyst – which included five Big South Women’s Basketball Championships from 2005-09.  Her role at the network has expanded to college football, men’s college basketball, college softball, high school basketball and lacrosse.  Weisbrod has worked with ESPN’s family of networks in addition to WGN Radio, Comcast Sports Net Chicago, Big Ten Network, NBC Sports, CBS Sports and Sporting News.  On Jan. 28, 2009, she called her first men’s college basketball game featuring West Virginia vs. St. John’s, and is now one of a few female analysts nationally who regularly call men’s college basketball -- including ESPNU’s broadcast of VMI at Coastal Carolina on Jan. 19, 2013.

Weisbrod played basketball, softball and tennis at Coastal Carolina from 1997-2001 and was the Big South’s Women’s Basketball Player of the Year in 2001 in addition to being a two-time All-Conference honoree.  The Conference’s Rookie of the Year for the 1997-98 season, Weisbrod is one of three players in Coastal Carolina basketball history with 1,000 points, 400 rebounds, 200 assists and 200 steals.  She finished her career 14th on Big South’s all-time scoring list with 1,401 points (currently 24th), 5th on the Big South’s all-time steals list with 281 (currently 6th), and 5th on the Big South’s all-time 3-point field goal list with 151 (currently 17th).  Voted to the 2000-09 Big South Women’s Basketball All-Decade Team, Weisbrod is Coastal’s all-time leader in steals, ranks 6th in field goals (512), 5th in three-pointers (151), 7th in assists (286), and 6th in points.  Weisbrod’s multi-sport collegiate career featured four home runs in 42 games at DH/RF as a freshman on the Chanticleers’ 1998 Big South Softball Championship squad, as well as a member of the 1999-00 Women’s Tennis team as a junior.  She was named the NCAA Woman of the Year for South Carolina in 2001 and was a Coastal Carolina University Wall Fellow -- Wall College of Business during her time as a student-athlete.  Weisbrod was inducted into the Coastal Carolina Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007.

As part of the VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Basketball Championships, 22 men’s and women’s Big South basketball teams will play in 20 games at The HTC Center beginning Tuesday, March 3; the men’s and women’s championship games will be held on Sunday, March 8.  For tickets, please call the Coastal Carolina Athletics Ticket Office at 843-347-8499, or visit www.GoCCUSports.com/tickets.
