No. 6 Longwood Upends No. 3 UNC Asheville, Moves On To Semifinals
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Dan Campos tallied six points in Longwood's regular season finale four days ago, he followed that up with a five-point effort to lead sixth-seeded Lancers to a 3-1 upset victory over the third-seeded UNC Asheville Sunday afternoon in Big South Tournament quarterfinals action at Greenwood Soccer Field.
The junior midfielder paced the Lancer attack with two goals and his NCAA-leading 12th assist of the season to help Longwood avenge a 3-2 overtime loss earlier this season. A product of Bergen, Norway, Campos continued his hot streak with a combined three assists in back-to-back games and four in the last five contests.
With the upset win, Longwood advances to the Big South semifinals for the second time in its five seasons in the league, matching the effort of the 2013 squad. In addition, five of Longwood's six seniors –
Carlos Canas,
Vaughn Fowler,
Evan Fowler,
Michael Margulis and
Zach Corcoran – will have the opportunity to play in their second Big South semifinals.
With the win, Longwood will look to avenge its loss at second-seeded High Point earlier this season. That semifinal will take place Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m., at Vert Stadium.
Longwood got the offense rolling early as Campos found freshman midfielder
Connor Rea – his third goal of the season and first in Big South play – in the sixth minute for the game-winning goal, and a 1-0 lead.
Canas made six saves against 16 shots faced.
Campos' first goal of the night came on a penalty kick in the 12th minute, then sealed the victory with the third Lancer goal of the afternoon in the 79th minute.
