Big South Announces Volleyball Players of the Week - Oct. 8

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Winthrop junior setter Siani Yamaguchi (Waimanalo, Hawaii) has been named the Big South Volleyball Player of the Week, while teammate Carlie Skelton (Mt. Florence, S.C.) is the conference’s Defensive Player of the Week for matches played Oct 1-7. In addition, High Point outside hitter Madison Smith (Hillard, Ohio) is the Freshman of the Week for the second time this season, the conference office announced Monday.
 
Yamaguchi helped lead the Eagles to a 2-0 record last week, with each win coming on the road in four sets. She tallied 107 assists (13.38 per set), 32 digs (4.00 per set) and 11 points (1.38 per set). On Friday against USC Upstate, Yamaguchi had a career-high 66 assists along with a .375 hitting percentage, 20 digs and a block. Then on Saturday, she recorded an additional 41 assists and 12 digs at UNC Asheville.
 
Skelton finished last week with 43 digs (5.38 per set) in Winthrop’s two matches. At USC Upstate, she tallied 13 digs in the four-set win. Skelton followed that performance with 30 more in another four-set road victory, this time against UNC Asheville.
 
Smith helped the Panthers to three sweeps last week with 32 kills (3.56 per set), a .383 hitting percentage, six blocks and 35 points (3.89 per set). She tallied 12 kills for a .556 hitting percentage and two blocks against Campbell. Then at Charleston Southern, Smith recorded 11 kills, a .450 hitting percentage, a dig and a block.
 
Also nominated for Player of the Week: Brooke Monssen (Charleston Southern), Madison Smith (High Point), Valerie Gonzalez (Radford) and Emily Russel (USC Upstate).
 
Also nominated for Defensive Player of the Week: Caitlyn Michalski (Charleston Southern), Abby Bottomley (High Point), Grace Green (Radford), Madison Zyburt (UNC Asheville) and Emily Russel (USC Upstate).
