2018-19 Big South Presidential Honor Roll Nears 60 Percent
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – The Big South Conference announced today that 58.90 percent of eligible student-athletes earned Presidential Honor Roll status for their work in the classroom in 2018-19 -- the second-highest percentage in league history. To be named to the Presidential Honor Roll, student-athletes must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or better for the recently-completed academic year, and this past season, 1,945 out of 3,302 eligible student-athletes achieved the benchmark. In addition, the 58.90 percentage marks the fifth consecutive year above 55 percent.
High Point University led all Big South institutions for the fifth straight year, as HPU had 71.79 percent of its 234 eligible student-athletes on the Presidential Honor Roll -- one of four members to have at least 70 percent of 3.0 students. UNC Asheville placed 70.81 percent of its 185 eligible student-athletes on the list, while Winthrop University had 70.54 percent of its 258 student-athletes among the honorees. Radford University followed with a 70.36 percentage of its 253 student-athletes. An additional three members surpassed the 60 percent threshold: Presbyterian College (65.40), Hampton University (63.49) and Campbell University (62.82).
Furthermore, 18 conference Player of the Year honorees from last season -- four of which achieved 4.0 GPAs -- plus 11 Freshman of the Year selections earned Presidential Honor Roll status.
The Big South had 174 student-athletes receive Commissioner’s Award distinction in 2018-19 for having a 4.0 GPA. Each of the Big South’s 19 sponsored sports had at least three 4.0 students. Gold Award scholars (3.75-3.99) totaled 413 while another 443 received Silver Award (3.50-3.74) accolades in 2018-19 for a combined total of 1,029 student-athletes with at least a 3.50 GPA last year -- 52.90 percent of all Presidential Honor Roll members at or above that threshold.
The 2018-19 Commissioner’s Award honorees are listed below by sport, while the full 2018-19 Presidential Honor Roll is attached in PDF format.
