Big South Reveals 2019-20 Women's Basketball League Schedule
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – The Big South Conference unveiled its 2019-20 women’s basketball composite league schedule Wednesday afternoon. The 110-game slate over a 10-week period begins on Saturday, Dec. 28, and features a 20-game double round robin schedule to determine the 2019-20 regular-season champion.
The 11 Big South members will play each team once during the first half of the season from Dec. 28-Jan. 28, before the second scheduled meetings of the year start Feb. 1. The slate will primarily feature the league’s Tuesday-Saturday format that has been in place since 2014-15. Big South play will have one three-game week (Jan. 6-9-11), games on Wednesday, March 4, as well as contests on New Year’s Eve and Leap Year Day. Each team will receive two byes during the season.
Schedule highlights include defending Big South champion Radford opening its league season at home against Presbyterian on Dec. 31, and closing the first half of the schedule at home against Campbell on Tuesday, Jan. 28 -- the first re-match of last year’s title contest between the squads. The second Radford-Campbell meeting is set for Saturday, Feb. 15.
Campbell, which was a WBI Semifinalist in 2019, begins conference play at home on Dec. 28 against High Point and new Panthers’ head coach Chelsea Banbury. Banbury’s first home Big South tilt will be Saturday, Jan. 4 against USC Upstate.
UNC Asheville and Radford, which have combined for eight postseason appearances the last five years, go head-to-head on Saturday, Jan. 11 in Radford, with the return game on Wednesday, March 4 in Kimmel Arena. The Highlanders defeated the Bulldogs in the 2019 Big South Semifinals after Asheville eliminated Radford in the conference tournament in 2017 and 2018.
Hampton, the only Big South team to defeat Radford in 2018-19, will face the Highlanders on Thursday, Jan. 9 at home, while the second match-up will be in the regular-season finale on Saturday, March 7 in the Dedmon Center.
Opening the conference season at home on Dec. 28 will be Campbell (vs. High Point), Longwood (vs. Gardner-Webb), UNC Asheville (vs. Presbyterian), USC Upstate (vs. Charleston Southern) and Winthrop (vs. Hampton). The Eagles, as well as Radford, will start and end conference action at home, while Hampton will begin and finish league play with road games.
Radford carries the conference’s longest active regular-season Big South win streak into the season at 15 games, while the Highlanders also own the league’s active win streak for home conference victories at 16. High Point, which is seeking its eighth-straight 10-win Big South season in 2019-20, has won its last seven regular-season conference contests.
The 2020 Big South Women’s Basketball Championship will again be a home-site, earned-seed format with the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds hosting the quarterfinal and semifinal round as part of the double-pod system introduced in 2019. Three first round games at the No. 6, 7 and 8 seeds open the Championship on Tuesday, March 10, followed by the quarterfinals (March 12) and semifinals (March 13) at the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, with the highest remaining seed hosting the Championship game on Sunday, March 15.
