2019-20 Big South Presidential Honor Roll Sets Record High
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – The Big South Conference announced today that a league-record 64.83 percent of eligible student-athletes earned Presidential Honor Roll status for their work in the classroom in 2019-20. To be named to the Presidential Honor Roll, student-athletes must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or better for the recently-completed academic year, and this past season, 2,264 out of 3,492 eligible student-athletes achieved the benchmark. In addition, the 64.83 percentage marks the first time above 60 percent.
“Once again Big South student-athletes amaze,” exclaimed Big South Commissioner Kyle Kallander. “Wow! A record-smashing 65% earned better than a 3.0 GPA! I am so proud to be associated with as fine a group of student-athletes as there is in the country. Talented, dedicated, smart, leaders, winners!”
High Point University led all Big South institutions for the sixth straight year, as HPU had 81.68 percent of its 273 eligible student-athletes on the Presidential Honor Roll -- one of six members to have at least 70 percent of 3.0 students. Winthrop University placed 74.62 percent of its 260 eligible student-athletes on the list, while Gardner-Webb University (269-of-368 student-athletes) and Longwood University (144-of-197) each had 73.10 percent earn a 3.0 GPA for the year. Radford University followed with a 72.76 percentage of its 257 student-athletes, just ahead of USC Upstate’s percentage of 72.27 among its 256 student-athletes. An additional three members reached the 60 percent threshold: Presbyterian College (69.08), Campbell University (63.81) and UNC Asheville (60.00).
Furthermore, eight conference Player of the Year honorees from last season -- two of which achieved 4.0 GPAs -- plus eight Freshman of the Year selections earned Presidential Honor Roll status.
The Big South had 226 student-athletes receive Commissioner’s Award distinction in 2019-20 for having a 4.0 GPA. Each of the Big South’s 19 sponsored sports had at least four 4.0 students. Gold Award scholars (3.75-3.99) totaled 534 while another 532 received Silver Award (3.50-3.74) accolades in 2019-20 for a combined total of 1,292 student-athletes with at least a 3.50 GPA last year -- 57.04 percent of all Presidential Honor Roll members at or above that threshold.
