Big South Announces Women's Basketball Players of the Week - Jan. 4

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – UNC Asheville senior guard Nadiria Evans (Gainesville, Fla.) has been named the Big South Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while USC Upstate redshirt-freshman guard McKinley Brooks-Sumpter (Columbia, S.C.) is the Freshman of the Week for games played Dec. 28-Jan. 3, it was announced today.

Evans averaged 23.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals in leading the Bulldogs to a sweep of Longwood.  She opened the series last Wednesday with a career-high-tying 34 points, plus six rebounds, three assists and three steals in Asheville’s 74-69 victory.  On Thursday, Evans contributed 12 points and five boards while making 6-of-8 from the free throw line in a 68-52 win.  For the week, she was 13-of-24 from the field ( =54.2 percent) and 19-of-24 from the charity stripe ( =79.2).

Brooks-Sumpter averaged 17.0 points and 7.0 rebounds in the two-game series vs. High Point.  She carried the team in the series opener on Wednesday with a career-high 24 points along with a game-high 10 rebounds.  Brooks-Sumpter followed with a team-high 10 points along with five caroms, two assists and two steals in the finale on Thursday.  She also made 8-of-11 free throw attempts ( =72.7) in the series.
