#6 Gardner-Webb Upsets #3 Longwood, Advances to Semifinals
The Gardner-Webb men's soccer team emerged victorious over #3 Longwood University in the first round of the 2021 Big South Men's Soccer Championship in Virginia on Saturday afternoon.
"I am so proud of this team," said head coach
Tony Setzer. "We attacked the ball early on and did exactly what we needed to do defensively to keep the ball out of our net. Sam Catherall and
Ryan Madondo did an excellent job today leading this team today in the win against Longwood to keep the postseason dream alive. Now we will refocus and ready up for High Point this Wednesday."
Samuel Catherall and
Ryan Madondo led the Runnin' Bulldogs offensive attack through the Lancers backfield, as Catherall scored just 11 minutes into match play and Madondo scored just three minutes later. This early attack by the 'Dogs put them up two for almost the remainder of the match.
The Lancers nailed one in between the posts with just five minutes left in regulation, but it wasn't enough to stop the Runnin' Bulldogs from coming away with a win.
GWU paced the match in shots with 16, LWU took just five less. Longwood had four corner kick opportunities, while Gardner-Webb had a pair. The 'Dogs led the match in fouls with eight, while the Lancers had three less.
The 'Dogs will be back in action on Wednesday, November 10, as they are set to take on #2 High Point University in the Semifinals of the 2021 Big South Men's Soccer Championship. The match is slated to start at 6 pm and will stream on ESPN+.
