Big South Announces Football Players of the Week - March 15
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Kennesaw State sophomore Jonathan Murphy (Los Angeles, Calif.) has been named the Big South Football Offensive Player of the Week, while teammate linebacker Bryson Armstrong (Marietta, Ga.) is the Defensive Player of the Week for games played during the league’s third week of the spring season. KSU kicker Nathan Robertson (Columbus, Ga.) is the Special Teams Player of the Week, and Owls’ defensive lineman Tyler Scott (Jackson, Ga.) is the Freshman of the Week.
Murphy totaled 221 yards of offense and was responsible for three touchdowns in leading the Owls to a 24-19 victory over Charleston Southern in the Big South opener for both squads. He came off the bench midway through the second quarter and rushed for 113 yards and a score, in addition to 108 yards on 4-of-5 passing attempts with two scoring strikes. Murphy’s 23-yard TD pass in the second quarter tied the game at 7-7, while his 7-yard scoring run pushed KSU’s lead to 17-7. He later threw a 51-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter to give the Owls a 24-7 advantage.
Armstrong led the KSU defense with eight tackles (five solo), in addition to 2.5 tackles-for-loss for minus-17 yards, and 1.5 sacks (-13). His effort helped the Owls limit the Buccaneers to 244 yards of offense and just 84 on the ground. Armstrong’s first stop behind the line led to a 3rd-and-long play and eventual punt. His first sack was on a third down that forced a punt, and his second sack was for a nine-yard loss on first down.
Robertson kicked a crucial 25-yard field goal that gave Kennesaw State its first lead of the game at 10-7 as time expired in the first half. He was also perfect on an all three PAT attempts in the 24-19 victory over CSU.
Scott made three tackles (two solo) for the second consecutive game, and clogged the middle to hold Charleston Southern to 84 rushing yards. Scott also recorded a TFL for three yards when he brought down CSU’s quarterback on a 3rd-and-8 rushing play up the middle to force a punt late in the third quarter. KSU scored on the ensuing possession to move ahead, 24-7.
