Big South Announces Baseball Players of the Week - April 12
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) –- UNC Asheville’s Dominic Freeberger (Baltimore, Md.) has been named the Big South Baseball Player of the Week, while teammate Jacob Edwards (High Point, N.C.) is the Starting Pitcher of the Week for games played April 5-11, it was announced today. In addition, Gardner-Webb’s Isaac Campbell (Advance, N.C.) was selected the Relief Pitcher of the Week, and Campbell’s Zach Neto (Miami, Fla.) is the Freshman of the Week.
Freeberger batted .522 (12-23) with two home runs, six RBI, nine runs scored and a stolen base in four games last week. He helped the Bulldogs to a series win over Winthrop, as he was 11-16 against the Eagles ( =.688). Freeberger had four hits, 4 RBI and three runs in the game one win, and then tallied five hits, scored four times and plated two runs in the game two victory. He closed the series with two hits and two runs.
Edwards earned his first win of the year after allowing just two runs and no walks in 5.0 innings against the Eagles. He fanned seven batters, scattered seven hits, and did not allow an extra-base hit in earning the 11-3 victory in game two of the series.
Campbell notched one save and posted a 0.00 ERA in two relief appearances last week. He first struck out three batters in 2.0 innings in GWU’s win at Radford on Tuesday. Campbell then earned his first save of the year with three Ks in 2.2 innings in the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ 8-5 victory over USC Upstate on Friday.
Neto hit .500 (8-16) with two home runs, one double, seven runs scored and 9 RBI in four games for the Camels. He opened his week with two hits (one homer), three RBI and two runs at Winthrop on Tuesday. Neto then tallied two hits (one homer) and three RBI in the series opener vs. Charleston Southern on Friday. In Saturday’s doubleheader against CSU, Neto was 4-7 with four runs and three RBI in Campbell’s sweep of the Bucs.
