Campbell Wins 2020-21 Sasser Cup Trophy
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Campbell University has been awarded the Big South Conference’s George F. “Buddy” Sasser Cup Trophy for the 2020-21 athletic season, marking the school’s second consecutive trophy and fifth overall. The Cup was presented to Campbell Tuesday evening at the league’s annual Spring Meetings Awards Banquet, which was held at The Westin Resort on Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Campbell is projected to finish with an average between 9.86-10.04 Sasser Cup points in 2020-21. While results from this week’s conference’s baseball championship tournament factor into the calculation formula, Campbell clinched the Sasser Cup as it will not fall below second-place High Point’s average of 9.52. The Camels have won six Big South championships in 2020-21 -- two outright regular-season titles and four tournament crowns. Campbell won the regular-season title in softball and baseball, while claiming the conference tournament championship in women’s soccer, women’s golf, men’s golf and softball. Campbell is also the No. 1 seed in this week’s Ingles Big South Baseball Championship.
High Point finished second to Campbell this season with a 9.52 average in 13 sports and totaled 123.75 points -- the Panthers’ second consecutive runner-up finish. Radford was third in the standings (7.68 average), and was followed by USC Upstate (7.02-7.21 range) and Gardner-Webb (6.68-6.82 range) to round out the top five.
The Panthers claimed the Women’s All-Sports Trophy for the third-straight year with their average of 11.29 (79 points earned in seven sports), ahead of Campbell’s 10.13 average (81 points earned in eight sports). High Point won three regular-season and four tournament titles in women’s competition to capture the Women’s All-Sports Trophy. Radford was third in the Women’s All-Sports race with its 7.22 average (65 points earned in nine sports).
Campbell also earned the Men’s All-Sports Trophy for the third consecutive time. The Camels’ Men’s All-Sports title is based on its projected final range of 9.50-9.92 points. Radford was second with an average of 8.38 (50.25 in six sports), followed by High Point and UNC Asheville at 7.46 (each accumulated 44.75 points earned in six men’s sports).
The Sasser Cup Trophy is named for former Big South Commissioner Buddy Sasser and is awarded to the Big South member institution with the most successful year athletically, based on an average points system. Points are awarded for both regular-season and tournament finishes in each of the League’s 19 championships, and the average of the combined total is used to determine the overall point allocation in the respective sport. One bonus point is added to the average total for each Conference Champion/AQ representative, as well as any teams that receive at-large NCAA Championships berths. Teams tied in regular-season or tournament play split the points earned. Each member’s overall point totals are then divided by the number of sports sponsored by that school to determine the average.
