Campbell's Spencer Packard Drafted by Seattle in MLB Draft
Campbell outfielder
Spencer Packard was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the ninth round of the MLB Draft on Monday. Packard was the 264th overall pick of the draft.
Packard played all 55 games for the fighting Camels this season and slashed .371/.452/.504 with 11 HR and 67 RBI. The 67 RBI were good for fourth in the nation and tops in the Big South Conference. His performance at the plate helped him earn NCBWA second-team all-America honors, as well as ABCA Atlantic Region second-team. He was also named first-team all-Big South.
This season, he led the Big South in both hits and RBI, was second in both average and OBP, third in runs scored and fourth in doubles.
The corner outfielder has been good in big spots his whole career at Campbell and landed on the Greenville Regional all-tournament team in 2019 and the Big South Championship all-tournament team in 2021. He hit a first-inning three-run blast against Mississippi State in the Starkville Regional final in what proved to be his final game in a Camel uniform.
In three seasons at Campbell after transferring from Arizona Western College, Packard posted a career line of .324/.488/.629 with 39 doubles, 14 home runs and 118 RBI.
Packard, a Tucson, Arirz. native, is the 41st draft pick in program history, and first since 2019 when four players were drafted. He is the 14th Camel selected since 2009 and the 10th drafted during head coach
Justin Haire's tenure.
The MLB Draft continues Tuesday with rounds 11-20.
