Big South Announces Men's Tennis Players of the Week - Feb. 9
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – UNC Asheville’s Leo Bierbaum (Nürnberg, Germany) has been named the Big South Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, while Gardner-Webb’s Alex Lepine (Montreal, Quebec) is the Men’s Freshman of the Week for matches played Jan. 31-Feb. 6, it was announced today.
Bierbaum picked up two wins last week to remain a perfect 4-0 in singles play this season. He earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory at the No. 2 flight to help lift Asheville to a 4-3 win at UNC Greensboro on Sunday. He also teamed with Jon Brann Reid for a 7-5 doubles win that clinched the doubles point for the Bulldogs. On Saturday against Emmanuel, Bierbaum and Reid cruised to a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles before Bierbaum won his No. 2 singles match, 6-2, 6-3.
Lepine posted a 2-1 record last week. After he dropped his opening match of the week in a tiebreaker to Lenoir-Rhyne (6-2, 5-7, 0-1) on the No. 4 court, Lepine bounced back to win the opening singles point for GWU in the following two matches of the week. On Wednesday, he defeated Lees-McRae, 6-1, 6-1 on court 4, and knocked off Georgia Southern on court 5, 6-4, 6-0, on Saturday.
