#6 Campbell Edges #11 Presbyterian College in Double OT, Advances to Quarterfinals
Milos Stajcic hit a 3-pointer through contact with 0.6 seconds left in the second overtime to lift Campbell to a 75-72 win over Presbyterian in the Big South Championship first round Wednesday night at Bojangles' Coliseum.
The sixth-seeded Camels (16-12) advance to Friday's 8 p.m. quarterfinal against 3rd seed Gardner-Webb (17-12).
After forcing a second OT period with a late runner in the first extra segment,
Jordan Whitfield fed Stajcic for the game-winning bucket. A senior from Belgrade, Serbia, Stajcic added on a free throw to finish with a season-high 11 points.
Whitfield finished with 16 points to lead five Camels in double figures.
Cedric Henderson, Jr. added 15 points, Jesus Carralero had 14 points, a career-high 13 rebounds and matched his career best with eight assists.
Austin McCullough added 10 points for the Camels, who converted on their last four possessions.
Winston Hill led 11th seed Presbyterian with 20 points and nine rebounds, Rayshon Harrison added 18 points, Marquis Barnett 17 and Trevon Reddish-Rhone 12 for the Blue Hose, who trailed by 13 early in the second half before forcing OT.
After Reddish-Rhone gave the Blue Hose a 55-53 lead with 1:09 left in regulation, Carralero knocked in both ends of a 1-and-1 with 42.3 seconds to go. McCullough then drew a charge from Reddish-Rhone with 30.6 seconds to play giving the Camels a chance to win in regulation. However,
Messiah Thompson's pullup jumper was off target and the game continued.
PC jumped to a 63-58 lead on Hill's bucket in the paint with 1:54 left in OT before the Camels clawed back. Carralero's free throws with 43 seconds to play cut the lead to 63-62 and the Blue Hose missed three of four from the stripe in the final 25.7 seconds.
Reddish-Rhone missed both foul shots and Whitfield drove down the right side and hit a baseline floater as time expired to tie the game at 64.
In the second OT period, Whitfield's pullup jumper gave the Camels a 70-68 lead with 1:10 to go, but Hill tied it from the line with 1:00 to play. After Henderson made 1-of-2 from the stripe with 37 seconds left, Marquis Barnett's second-chance jumper put the Blue Hose back in front with 13 seconds to play.
With no time outs remaining, Whitfield ran a high ball screen with Stajcic, who stepped back and swished his triple from the top of the key despite being fouled by Hill.
Campbell finished the night shooting 44 percent (24-54) overall, made 7-of-22 threes (.318) and 20-of-30 (.667) from the line. PC shot just 38.8 percent (26-67), but converted 18 offensive rebounds into a 21-9 edge in second-chance points. The Blue Hose hit 8-of-27 threes (.296) and 12-of-23 (.522) from the line, while finishing with a 44-36 edge on the boards.
"Seems like there were six different ways for us to lose it, but we figured out a way to win," said Campbell head coach
Kevin McGeehan.
Campbell held PC to just 27.6 percent (8-29) in the first half and took a 31-19 lead at intermission. Seven different Camels scored in the opening half. CU hit 40 percent of its shots (10-25), including 4-of-10 threes, while knocking down 7-of-9 from the line.
