Big South Announces 2022 Women's Lacrosse Annual Award Winners
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – High Point’s Abby Hormes (Fallston, Md.) has been voted the 2022 Big South Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Year by the Conference’s head coaches, it was announced this afternoon by the league office. In addition, Campbell’s Sam Bischoff (Pomona, N.Y.) is the first-ever Midfielder of the Year, while teammate Rebekah Taylor (Forest Hill, Md.) is the Defensive Player of the Year honoree from the panel. High Point midfielder Mandy Brockamp (Aurora, Colo.) was tabbed Freshman of the Year, while High Point’s Lyndsey Boswell was voted Coach of the Year. The Big South’s sports information directors voted Campbell’s Megan Matthews (Aurora, Colo.) as the Women’s Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Hormes is the first three-time Big South Offensive Player of the Year honoree since the league began sponsoring women’s lacrosse in 2013. She finished the regular-season as the national leader in goals scored with a Big South single-season record of 93, while her 6.59 points per game is also tops in the country and pacing ahead of the league’s single-season mark. Hormes’ 5.47 goals per game and 112 points scored lead the NCAA and are first in the Big South record book. She scored seven game-winning goals in 2022, collected the second-most ground balls per game in the conference at 3.18, and tallied 101 draw controls and 5.94 draw controls per game. Hormes posted 15 hat tricks in 2022 -- including nine games with at least six goals, and tied the Big South single-game record with 10 goals against Radford on April 16. The five-time Big South Offensive Player of the Week scored 64 goals and 79 points in her nine Big South matches this season -- 7.11 goals per game and 8.78 points per contest. Hormes received the maximum nine first-place votes and 18 points in the voting, ahead of Mercer’s Hailey Rhatigan (seven points).
Bischoff is the first Midfielder of the Year honoree as the award was added prior to the 2022 season. She ranks third in the league in goals (52) and goals per game (3.25), and fourth in points (63) and points per game (3.94). The Big South Offensive Player of the Week on April 5, Bischoff tallied 11 hat tricks with three games of 5+ goals, in addition to 44 draw controls, 20 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers. She is the team leader with 52 goals and 63 points entering the conference tournament, and notched career-highs of seven goals and nine points in Campbell’s 17-14 win at High Point on March 30. In nine Big South matches, Bischoff scored 32 goals and netted 36 points, for averages of 3.56 goals per game and 4.00 points per game, while recording 20 draw controls. In the voting, Bischoff received seven first-place votes and 15 points, ahead of High Point’s Emma Genovese and Furman’s Lauren Farber, who finished with seven points each.
Taylor is the first Campbell Camel to win Defensive Player of the Year honors. She ranks second in the Big South in overall caused turnovers per game (1.69) and in league matches (2.22), and leads the team in ground balls (35) and caused turnovers (27). Taylor anchors a defense that leads the Big South in team caused turnovers (11.44) and permitted the second-fewest goals allowed. In conference matches, the Camels were tops with 14.00 caused turnovers per game. The Big South Defensive Player of the Week for April 12, Taylor posted a season-high six ground balls in the win over High Point on March 30, in addition to a season-best five caused turnovers in a victory over Gardner-Webb on April 13. She received four first-place votes and 10 points, just ahead of High Point’s Taylor Suplee (three first-place votes and nine points).
Brockamp is the first Panther to be voted Big South Freshman of the Year since Hormes won the honor in 2018. Brockamp was the Big South Freshman of the Week on April 12 and finished the regular-season with 18 goals, 20 points, 21 ground balls, 10 draw controls and nine caused turnovers. She scored 10 times and collected 16 ground balls against Big South foes. Brockamp had six multi-goal games, including a hat trick vs. Elon on March 16 and two scores against Duke on Feb. 20. She finished with 10 points in the Freshman of the Year voting (two first-place votes) to edge out Gardner-Webb’s Bria Foley (eight points, three first-place votes).
Boswell led the Panthers to their fifth consecutive Big South regular-season championship, as High Point shared the league title with Mercer at 8-1 in the standings. Matthews is also completing a minor in healthcare management, and is a six-time President’s List and Dean’s List honoree at Campbell.
