HIGH POINT, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) High Point’s performance in the 5,000 meters and fourth-place finish in the 4x400m relay was just enough to win its second-straight Big South Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship title on Wednesday with a final total of 178 points -- one point ahead of second-place North Carolina A&T (177).  Campbell finished third with 169 points.

FINAL RESULTS

High Point began the day first on the leaderboard, but its lead was overtaken by the Aggies late in the afternoon.  North Carolina A&T’s ascension toward the top spot began when Brayden Hodgest won his second event of the week, this time winning the discus with a throw of 50.93m.  The Aggies then won the 4x100m relay in a Championship Meet and Vert Stadium-record time of 38.74.  In the men’s 110m Hurdles, A&T went 1-2, as Cory Poole was first at 13.71 seconds, followed by Aveon Reid at 13.76.  The Aggies swept the top three spots in the 400m, led by Randolph Ross Jr.’s Big South record, Championship Meet record and facility record time of 44.61.  A&T then captured the top two times in the 100m with Javonte Harding crossing the line first in a time of 10.14.

North Carolina A&T also took the top three spots in the 400m Hurdles, led by Poole’s Big South record, Championship Meet record and Vert Stadium-record of 49.42 seconds to sweep both hurdle events -- the first to accomplish this feat since 1998.  The Aggies moved into first-place on the team leaderboard following the 200m dash, as Harding’s record time of 20.16 just eclipsed Ross’ 20.26.

Entering the 5,000m event, High Point trailed NCAT, 167-162, but the Panthers claimed 11 points in the event to jump back into first-place, leading with 173 points and just ahead of Campbell (169) and A&T (167), entering the final event of the day -- the 4x400m relay.  High Point scored just enough to win its second consecutive title.

Campbell’s Athanas Kioko defended his 1,500m crown with a time of 3:44.09, in which he reclaimed the lead in the final 300 meters to win by more than a second.  He is the first back-to-back 1,500 champion since 2011-12.  Kioko’s teammate Charles McBride II also repeated as a champion, as he claimed his second consecutive high jump title with a height of 2.10m.  Kioko also won the 800m (1:49.52) to become the first runner to win the 800m and 1,500m in the same meet since 2013.  He won his third gold when he repeated as the 5,000m champion (14:00.68), and his 30 accumulated points earned him the Most Valuable Athlete award.

A&T’s Hodgest was awarded the Freshman of the Year honor for having the most accumulated points by a freshman with 20 at the conclusion of the Championship.  He won both the shot put and discus.

Ross was tabbed Most Outstanding Performer based on having the highest ranking performance nationally at the meet using current TFFRS marks, as his record-breaking effort in the 400m Wednesday is tops in the nation.  Campbell Head Coach Virgil Givens was voted Coach of the Year by the league coaches at the conclusion of the meet, while North Carolina A&T’s Kimble Morris III was voted Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the league’s sports information directors.
