#4 Presbyterian Holds Off #5 Charleston Southern, Avoids Elimination

The Presbyterian Blue Hose (36-14) cruised past the Charleston Southern Buccaneers (27-28), 10-4, to advance in the Big South Championship.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Charleston Southern put the first two runs on the board on three hits in the top of the first inning. In the bottom of the first inning, Presbyterian scored three runs to take the lead for good. Layna Johnson scored PC's first run on Jillian Hewes's sacrifice fly to center field. The other two runs in the inning came on a two-run home run by Morgan Hess over the left center field wall. Kaitlyn Tucker scored on Hess's home run.

The Blue Hose exploded for five runs on five hits in the second inning. Kelby Goodrum, who reached base on a double to left field, scored the inning's first run on Johnson's double to right center field. Johnson scored the second run of the inning on Tucker's single to left field. Then, Lath Freeman blasted a two-run home run over the left field wall. Hewes scored the inning's fifth run on Hess's double to left field.

Charleston Southern scored a run in the third and fourth innings. In the sixth inning, Presbyterian scored the game's final two runs after Hess connected on her second home run of the game on a two-run shot over the left center field wall.

Haley Haselden collected her fourth win of the season after recording six strikeouts while scattering six hits and allowing three earned runs in three and a two-thirds innings in the circle. Hess finished the game in the circle throwing the final three and a third innings of shutout softball.

  • Hess went 4-for-4 with two home runs and a double while driving in five runs.
  • Seven PC players scored at least one run in the game. Johnson, Tucker and Hess scored two runs apiece.
