#3 Longwood Edges #2 Campbell, Forces Winner-Take-All Title Game
Junior
Lauren Taylor knocked a seventh inning solo homer to win the game forcing a sudden death championship matchup Sunday morning for all the marbles.
In another low scoring outing between Longwood and Campbell, it was the Lancers (34-23) who finished on top due to a rocket sent into space from the junior shortstop from Mechanicsville, Virginia.
It was a slow start Saturday night at the plate for Longwood, as the team saw no runs until the fifth, with five hits recorded and six errors on the opposing side.
Lancers rallied back after going down 2-0 at the end of four.
Top of the fifth, Taylor made an early impact reaching on an error from third base scoring
Kayley DeVivi with two outs recorded.
Longwood struck again when DeVivi in the box again, singled to left center scoring the speedy Freshman of the Year,
Jaden Pone.
Campbell (26-17) was able to strike first when Delaney McDilda reached on a fielding error by the Lancers, scoring Savannah White.
Claudia Ware was 2-2 from the plate Saturday evening, with one RBI coming in the bottom of the fourth when the Camels went ahead 2-0.
"It was a great team win," said Head Coach Megan Brown. "I could not be prouder of their fight and determination. They have worked so hard all year and are seeing the results of their dedication, fight, and determination."
Two not being enough for Campbell after seven, Longwood survived another day with just one game left to decide it all.
The final game will decide the 2022 Big South Champions, and will be played again at Lancer Field at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
