Big South Announces Baseball Players of the Week - May 9

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) –- Campbell’s Ty Babin (Jackson, N.J.) has been named the Big South Baseball Player of the Week, while High Point’s Sam Garcia (Wilmington, N.C.) is the Starting Pitcher of the Week for games played May 2-8, it was announced today.  In addition, HPU’s Sean Duffy (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) was selected the Relief Pitcher of the Week, while UNC Asheville’s Robbie Burnett (Franklinton, N.C.) is the Freshman of the Week.

Babin hit .583 (7-12) with four runs scored, five RBI, one double, two home runs, a 1.167 slugging percentage and .643 on-base average in three games last week.  He first provided a 2-run single that gave Campbell the lead for good over Duke last Tuesday.  Babin then went 3-4 with two runs, two RBI, a double and homer at Winthrop in game one of the series, and followed with another 3-4 effort with two runs and a solo home run on Saturday.  He also walked in each contest.

Garcia allowed just one hit and struck out 13 batters in seven shutout innings of his 1-0 victory at North Carolina A&T on Sunday.  After allowing a first-inning single, Garcia retired the next 18 hitters before issuing his only walk of the game in the seventh.  He also fanned two batters in six of his seven frames.

Duffy earned the save in High Point’s 1-0 win at North Carolina A&T on Sunday with two perfect innings against the Aggies.  He struck out four of the six batters he faced, with two in each inning.

Burnett batted .375 with seven RBI, two home runs, one triple, a .875 slugging clip and .444 on-base average.  He opened his week with a 2-run triple at Western Carolina on Wednesday, then had two hits and two RBI in Asheville’s series opener vs. Gardner-Webb.  Burnett concluded his week with two home runs among his three hits in Sunday’s finale, and plated three runs in the Bulldogs’ 7-1 victory.

Also nominated for Relief Pitcher of the Week: Ryan Chasse (Campbell), Evan Truitt (Charleston Southern), Cole Taylor (Longwood), Blake Little (UNC Asheville) and Austin Morgan (USC Upstate).

Also nominated for Freshman of the Week:
Grant Knipp (Campbell), Tyler Switalski (Gardner-Webb) and Noah Sullivan (USC Upstate).
