Big South Announces Baseball Players of the Week - March 6
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – UNC Asheville’s Dylan Bacot (Fayetteville, N.C.) has been named the Big South Baseball Player of the Wee while UNC Asheville’s Ryan Douglas (Climax, N.C.) is the Starting Pitcher of the Week for games played February 27-March 5, it was announced today. In addition, Radford’s Ty Burton (LaBelle, Fla.) was selected Relief Pitcher of the Week while High Point’s Brayden Simpson (Moseley, Va.) and USC Upstate’s Mathieu Curtis (Tega Cay, S.C.) are co-Freshmen of the Week.
Bacot hit .412 (7-of-17) with a 1.059 slugging percentage, three home runs, and 15 RBI during the week against Charlotte and Iona. He collected multi-hit games with a home run in each of the first three games of the week and collected three-plus RBI in each of his four games last week.
Douglas struck out 11 over seven innings, scattering five hits in UNC Asheville’s 11-1 win over Iona. He didn’t walk a batter in the outing with only two baserunners reaching scoring position against him. His 11 strikeouts were also a career high.
Burton made three scoreless appearances for Radford and had seven strikeouts and a 0.00 earned run average. He tossed 1.2 innings, allowing just two hits while striking out three versus No. 11 Virginia Tech before allowing just one baserunner in 1.2 innings against No. 21 NC State. He closed the week striking out the side in a scoreless inning against Hartford.
Simpson hit .429 (3-of-7) with a double and eight RBI in games against Lafayette last week for High Point. He earned his first career start Friday and went 1-for-2 with two RBI after entering the game as a pinch hitter Saturday. He closed the series going 2-for-3 with a career-best six runs batted in to help the Panthers earn a series split.
Curtis surrendered six hits and a run working out of the bullpen for USC Upstate in a midweek win over Clemson. Entering out of the pen for the first time this season, he stranded two runners in his first inning of work before the Spartans took the lead as he retired the next six batters he faced, earning the win.
