Big South Announces Tennis Players of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com– Gardner-Webb’s Kim Niethammer (Harrenburg, Germany) has been named the Big South Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, while Campbell’s Lukas Steffen (Cary, N.C.) is the Men’s Freshman of the Week for matches played April 3-9, it was announced today.  In addition, UNC Asheville’s Ami Grace Dougah (Lawrenceville, Ga.) is the Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, and teammate Elizabeth Tindera (Dana, Ind.) is the Women’s Freshman of the Week honoree.

Niethammer picked up a pair of straight-set singles victories over Longwood and UNC Asheville to help the Runnin’ Bulldogs clinch a share of the regular-season championship.  He first won 6-4, 6-1 on court five against the Lancers that clinched the match, then moved up to the No. 4 flight for a 6-2, 6-3 triumph to capture the second point of the contest against Asheville.

Steffen helped the Camels earn a 5-2 victory over UNC Asheville with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles, which secured a berth in the upcoming Big South Championship.

Dougah was 4-0 last week on the No. 1 court to help the Bulldogs capture the regular-season championship.  She first won in doubles against Presbyterian, 6-2, then was a 6-2, 6-2 in singles.  On Saturday vs. Charleston Southern, Dougah posted a 6-3 triumph on the doubles court, then won in straight sets in singles, 6-2, 6-1.

Tindera won three matches last week at the No. 3 flight.  She claimed a 6-2 doubles win vs. PC, then won 6-1, 6-1 in singles.  Tindera then won 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 in singles against Charleston Southern to help Asheville win its first Big South regular-season title since 1989.
