Radford's Bryce Corbett Wins 2023 Men's Golf Championship Medalist Honors

NINETY SIX, S.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Radford's Bryce Corbett shot a 1-under 71 on Tuesday and held off his group competitors to claim Medalist honors at the Big South Men’s Golf Championship with a 4-under 212 (75-66-71) in the 54-hole stroke play event, which was contested at the Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor (par 72, 7,054 yards) in Ninety Six, S.C.  Corbett is the first Highlander ever to win Big South Medalist honors, and has secured automatic entry into the the NCAA Regionals with his victory.

Corbett, who entered Tuesday’s final round tied for first-place at 3-under 141, maintained a lead between 1-3 strokes over playing partners Ben Carroll (Charleston Southern) and Nick Rakes (Longwood), as well as High Point's Charlie Barr, who was the clubhouse leader at 2-under while Corbett was still on the course.  Carroll eagled the par-5, 18 hole, and Corbett made par to win by one shot.  Rakes fell out of contention with three bogeys on his final six holes.  Following Corbett and Carroll on the leaderboard where Barr in third-place (2-under 214), Longwood's Brendan Dunphy (even-par 216), and Campbell's Henrik Lilja and Rakes tied for fifth at 1-over 217.  All six players were named to the Big South All-Championship Team.

In the team standings, Radford carded a 290 on Tuesday to finish with a team-aggregate 872, and will be the top seed in Wednesday’s Match Play Semifinal round.  The Highlanders were in a second-place tie after 36 holes and three strokes behind leader Longwood on the team leaderboard entering the day. Winthrop, buoyed by a final round best 1-over 289, tied Longwood for second-place at 875.  Charleston Southern fell two spots on the leaderboard with its 881, but remained in the top four and clinched the final Match Play berth.

Wednesday’s Match Play Championship Semifinal round will feature Radford against Charleston Southern starting on hole one, and Longwood vs. Winthrop beginning on hole 10.  The winners of each match will play in the championship final Wednesday afternoon, with the champion receiving the Big South’s automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.  The Match Play round can be followed on GolfStat’s Live Scoring page.
