Big South Announces Baseball Players of the Week - May 1
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Gardner-Webb’s Curtis Robison (Dillsburg, Pa.) has been named the Big South Baseball Player of the Week, while Winthrop’s Alex Logusch (St. Louis, Mo.) is the Starting Pitcher of the Week for games played April 24-30, it was announced today. In addition, Longwood’s Guillermo Garcia, Jr. (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) was selected the Relief Pitcher of the Week while the Lancers’ Ethan Walker (Salem, Va.) is the Freshman of the Week honoree.
In four games, Robison batted .611 (11-18) with six runs, six RBI, two home runs and a double. He tallied multi-hit performances and scored at least one run in all four games, and had an extra-base hit, as well as an RBI, in three of the four contests. He also walked twice. Robison opened the week going 4-5 with two runs, one RBI and a walk in a 14-7 road win over Western Carolina on Tuesday. He then opened a three-game series against Georgia Tech with two hits and a solo home run on Friday, followed by a 3-4 day at the plate with a run scored on Saturday. The senior outfielder rounded out play against the Yellow Jackets on Sunday with another pair of hits, including a three-run homer to cap a four-RBI afternoon.
Logusch tossed 6.1 innings in his start last week, allowing only one earned run on one hit while striking out nine, two shy of a career high. Facing Charlotte on Tuesday, he carried a no-hitter all the way into the seventh inning before exiting with a lead, leaving him in line to pick up the win as Winthrop went on to beat the 49ers in nonconference play by a 5-2 final score.
Garcia, Jr. allowed only two hits in 3.2 innings out of the bullpen while striking out seven and earning a save in Longwood’s 7-1 win over Radford on Friday. Entering with one out and the bases loaded in the sixth inning, he retired back-to-back batters to escape the jam without allowing a run to score. He ultimately struck out seven of the 11 batters faced, a career high, while holding Highlander hitters to just a .143 average against him.
Walker allowed no runs on just one hit in 5.0 complete innings to pick up a win for Longwood over Radford in the series finale on Saturday. He struck out three and did not allow a single walk, facing only three more than the minimum in that span to clinch a series win for the Lancers. The lone hit against him was an infield single as he limited Radford to a .063 opponent batting average against him.
