High Point Leads 2023 Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championships After Day 1
ROCK HILL, S.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Defending Champion
High Point sits atop the standings with 81 points after the first day of the 2023 Big South Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships Wednesday at the Irwin Belk Track Complex on the campus of Winthrop University. The Panthers had two individual champions and six All-Conference performers to boost its opening day lead.
Campbell is in second-place with 47 points, while
Charleston Southern is third with 24 points.
Champions were crowned on Wednesday in the Hammer Throw, Long Jump, Javelin, Pole Vault and 10,000-meter run. High Point’s
Alex Hoffman won the hammer with a distance of 55.64m, while USC Upstate’s
Channing Ferguson won the long jump with a leap of 7.45m. Campbell’s
Nicholas Veynovich was the victor in the javelin with a throw of 62.07m. High Point swept the pole vault for the third time since 2019, with
Nick Lourenco earning the gold medal with a clearance of 4.87m. Charleston Southern’s
Sam Waldin won the 10,000m run with a burst in the final 100 meters to cross the line in 29:55.58.
In preliminary action, Charleston Southern’s
Luciano Custodio finished with the top time in the 400m Hurdles at 52.15. In the 200m prelims, Campbell had the top three times, led by
Dominique Alexander’s 20.92. CSU’s
Rob Howorth paced the 1,500m runners with a top qualifying time of 3:58.87.
Meanwhile, High Point holds three of the top four spots in the decathlon after five events. Last year’s Champion
Evan Mills leads with 3,608 points, just ahead of Gardner-Webb’s
Cameron Donoghue (3,548 points) and HPU teammates
Kolt Byers (3,406) and
Felix LeBlanc (3,384).
The Big South Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships continue Thursday, May 11 from the Irwin Belk Track Complex at 12:00pm. Coverage on ESPN+ begins at 2:30pm.
