Campbell Leads After Day 1 of Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships

ROCK HILL, S.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) Campbell sits atop the standings with 30 points after the first day of the 2023 Big South Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships Wednesday at the Irwin Belk Track Complex on the campus of Winthrop University.  The Camels are just ahead of second-place High Point (28 points) and third-place Charleston Southern (15 points).
 
Champions were crowned on Wednesday in the Hammer Throw, Long Jump and 10,000-meter run.  Winthrop’s Ambar Nunez-Gomez won the hammer with a distance of 54.64m, becoming the Eagles’ first champion in the event since 2016.  UNC Asheville’s Claudia Prieto was victorious in the long jump with a distance of 6.12m -- the Bulldogs’ first-ever Big South long jump champion.  High Point’s Lindsey Ickes took home the 10,000m run in a Meet-record time of 34:53.30 for a nine-second victory.
 
In preliminary action, Campbell’s Chastity Pickett posted the top time in the 400m Hurdles with a mark of 58.60 seconds.  Charleston Southern’s Destiny Wallace had the top time in the 200m (23.69), and High Point’s Olive Allen crossed the finish line in the 1,500m in 4:44.07.
 
Meanwhile, UNC Asheville’s Mallory Haney is the Heptathlon leader following four events.  She sits in first-place with 2,859 points, ahead of 2022 Champion Chloe Greene of Charleston Southern (2,819 points) and Winthrop’s Monay James (2,765).
 
The Big South Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships continue Thursday, May 11 from the Irwin Belk Track Complex, beginning at 12:00pm.  Coverage on ESPN+ begins at 2:30pm.
