High Point Extends Lead in Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championship After Day 2

ROCK HILL, S.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – With two first-place finishers and five individuals on the podium Thursday, defending champion High Point extended its lead at the 2023 Big South Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships to 149 team points following the second day of competition at the Irwin Belk Track Complex on the campus of Winthrop University.  Campbell remains in second-place with 74 points, while UNC Asheville moved up into third-place with 38 points.
 
Four individual champions were crowned on Thursday.  In the decathlon, Gardner-Webb’s Cameron Donoghue won gold with 6,812 points and edged out last year’s champion Evan Mills of High Point (6,799) for the top spot.  Donoghue is GWU’s first-ever Big South decathlon champion.
 
High Point won its third gold medal of the Championship when Chris Van Niekerk claimed the shot put with a throw of 18.00m to become a two-time champion in the event.  Campbell’s Charles McBride II won the triple jump with a distance of 15.56m, with teammate Andre Douglas in second at 15.11m.  HPU’s Jake Tarosky won the 3,000m Steeplechase, as he crossed the finish line at 9:05.32 for a six-second victory.
 
The Big South Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships conclude Friday, May 12 from the Irwin Belk Complex, beginning at 1:00pm on ESPN+.
