High Point Wins 2023 Big South Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship

ROCK HILL, S.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) High Point won two events and compiled 14 podium finishes Friday to win the 2023 Big South Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship title with a final total of 249 points for the program’s third consecutive crown.  Campbell finished second with 170 points, while Charleston Southern was third with 157 points.
 
The Panthers tallied 160 team points on Friday, led by Sydney Koker’s win in the high jump and Dae’Nitra Hester’s victory in the 400m.  HPU also medaled in the javelin, discus, 1,500m, 100m Hurdles, 400m, 800m, 400m Hurdles, 5,000m and 4x400m Relay.  In other action, Campbell’s Dorcus Ewoi won the 800m (2:07.32) and 1,500 (Meet record time of 4:26.69) for the second consecutive year, while teammate Chastity Pickett completed the sweep of the hurdle events with a winning time of 13.34 in the 100mH and 57.28 in the 400mH.  Charleston Southern’s won the 4x100m Relay in a Meet record time of 44.73, as well as the 4x400m Relay, while Radford’s Chloe Wellings took home the 5,000m run in 16:56.20 -- becoming Radford’s first 5,000m champion since 2001.
 
Charleston Southern’s Chloe Greene accumulated 22 points to earn her the Most Valuable Athlete award, as she won the heptathlon and javelin, while earning seventh-place points in the long jump.
 
CSU’s Zemaya Carson claimed Freshman of the Year honors for having the most accumulated points by a freshman with 21, as she was runner-up in the shot put and discus, in addition to fourth in the hammer throw.  High Point’s Sydney Horn was tabbed Most Outstanding Performer based on having the highest ranking performance nationally at the meet using current TFFRS marks, as her pole vault winning height of 4.26m ranks 22nd-best in the country.  Campbell Head Coach Virgil Givens was voted Coach of the Year by the league coaches at the conclusion of the meet, while UNC Asheville’s Claudia Prieto was voted Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the league’s sports information directors.
