Big South Announces Volleyball Players of the Week - Sept. 18

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Charleston Southern middle blocker Indigo Young (Kennesaw, Ga.) and Winthrop outside hitter Karli Shepherd (New London, Ohio) have been named the Big South Volleyball Co-Player of the Week for matches played Sept. 11-17, it was announced today.  In addition, Gardner-Webb's Sophia Kotsovolos (Tampa, Fla.) was selected the Big South Libero of the Week, and Winthrop’s Reece Rhoads (Cumming, Ga.) is the Big South Freshman of the Week.
 
Young posted a .569 hitting percentage (46-5-72) in three matches with 46 kills (3.83 per set), 18.0 blocks (1.50 per set) and 56.5 points (4.71 per set).  She opened her weekend with 13 kills and a .500 hitting clip along with six blocks in a four-set setback to Florida A&M.  Young then tallied 19 kills and hit .567 with seven blocks in five sets vs. The Citadel.  She concluded her week with a .650 percentage (14-1-20) and five blocks in leading the Bucs to a sweep of South Carolina State.
 
Shepherd led the Eagles to a 3-1 victory over South Carolina on Saturday with a 16-kill, 16-dig double-double performance, in which she also tallied two blocks and 19 total points.  She added eight kills against Eastern Kentucky on Friday to earn a spot on the Winthrop Invitational All-Tournament Team.
 
Kotsovolos totaled 59 digs (4.92 digs per set) across three matches last week, which included two 20+ dig efforts.  She had 25 in GWU’s four-set victory over Eastern Michigan, and followed with 26 digs in a 3-2 win over Chattanooga, which entered the match 11-2 overall.  Kotsovolos also contributed four service aces and assisted on 16 points.
 
Rhoads tied for the team lead with 16 kills in Winthrop’s 3-1 victory over South Carolina on Saturday.  She also posted three blocks and finished with 18 points in the helping the Eagles to their first win of the season.
 
Also nominated for Player of the Week: Paige Bernstein (Gardner-Webb), Kasey Battle (Presbyterian), Baylor Herlehy (UNC Asheville) and Ady O’Grady (USC Upstate).
 
Also nominated for Libero of the Week: Angelika Rusin (Charleston Southern), Katie Nichols (UNC Asheville), Julia Gladhill (USC Upstate) and Madison Gorniak (Winthrop).
 
Also nominated for Freshman of the Week: Kahea Carvalho (Charleston Southern), Jenna Otts (Gardner-Webb), Julia Yurkovich (Presbyterian) and Albertine van der Goot (UNC Asheville).
