Big South Announces Men's Tennis Players of the Week - Feb. 21
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Gardner-Webb's Eduardo Dias (Parana, Brazil) has been named the Big South Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, while teammate Johan Van Wijk (Somerset West, South Africa) has been named the Men’s Freshman of the Week for matches played Feb. 12-18, it was announced today.
Dias posted four victories (two singles, two doubles) last week at the No. 1 flight. He first earned a 6-3 doubles victory against East Tennessee State, then came back to win his No. 1 singles match, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 to help GWU to the 4-1 team victory. Dias also won against The Citadel with results of 6-4 in doubles and 6-4, 6-2 in singles as the Runnin' Bulldogs prevailed as a team, 6-1.
Van Wijk helped Gardner-Webb to its first 8-0 start in program history with a 6-1 victory last Friday at The Citadel. The Somerset West, South Africa, native’s triumph at No. 5 singles (6-2, 7-5) clinched the match and gave the Runnin' Bulldogs a sweep of the singles competition.
