High Point Wins 2024 Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championship

HIGH POINT, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) High Point scored 172.5 team points thanks to seven gold medals and 16 podium finishes to win its fourth-straight Big South Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship title on Wednesday with a final total of 288.5 points.  USC Upstate finished runner-up with 156 points -- the program’s best Big South Championship Meet finish since becoming members in 2019, followed by Charleston Southern in third with 119 points.
 
High Point’s Chris Van Niekerk started the day winning his second gold medal, as he finished first in the discus with a throw of 53.96m.  The Panthers’ other event winners were Shaun Thomas (high jump), the 4x100m relay team, Graham Ferguson (1,500m), A’lajuwan Robinson (100m), Othmane El Gharissi (5,000m) and the 4x400m relay squad.
 
In other action, Nathan Cremin became Gardner-Webb’s first Big South champion in the 800m when he finished first in a personal-best time of 1:51.54.  Zac Weas became UNC Asheville’s first champion in the 110mH since 2013, while DaMarr Harvey became the Bulldogs’ first-ever winner in the 200m as he ran a personal-best 20.71 for the gold.  Charleston Southern’s Luciano Custodio became the first back-to-back Big South champion in the 400mH since 2014-15, and Shawn Langley Jr. prevailed in the 400m run for his second Big South gold medal in the event.
 
Gardner-Webb’s Quentin Peterson accumulated 24 overall points to earn him the Most Valuable Athlete award.  Charleston Southern’s Conan Harper claimed Freshman of the Year honors for having the most accumulated points by a freshman with 18.  High Point’s Cole Wilson earned Most Outstanding Performance based on having the highest ranking performance nationally at the meet using current TFFRS marks, as his decathlon-winning score of 7,466 ranks 19th in the country.  HPU’s Robinson clinched the Newcomer of the Year award based on his 23 accumulated points.  USC Upstate Head Coach Carson Blackwelder was voted Coach of the Year by the league coaches at the conclusion of the meet, while UNC Asheville’s Dylan Major was voted Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the league’s sports information directors.
