Big South Announces Women's Basketball Players of the Week - Dec. 8

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com– Radford guard Joi Williams (Leesburg, Va.) has been named the Big South Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while UNC Asheville guard Jamaria Freeman (Wilson, N.C.) is the Freshman of the Week for games played Dec. 1-7, it was announced today.
 
Williams recorded a career-high 36 points in Radford’s double-overtime win over Navy, including 27 points after halftime. She finished 13-of-23 from the field ( =56.6 percent), 6-of-11 from 3-point range ( =54.5 percent) and 4-of-4 from the free throw line. The junior guard helped the Highlanders erase a 17-point third-quarter deficit and forced a second overtime with a fadeaway, game-tying 3-pointer with three seconds left in the first. Her 36 points marked the most by a Big South player this season and the most by a Radford player since 1994. Williams also totaled four rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block, while her six 3-pointers matched a career high.
 
Freeman averaged 14.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals in a 1-1 week for UNC Asheville. She matched a career high with 16 points in a 64-58 win over South Carolina State, adding two rebounds, two assists and one steal. She then scored 13 points against North Florida with five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Freeman shot 10-of-27 from the field for the week ( =37.0 percent), while her five boards also matched a career high.
 
Also nominated for Player of the Week: Tyonna Bailey (Charleston Southern), Amina Gray (Gardner-Webb), Nevaeh Zavala (High Point), Malea Brown (Longwood), Aileen Marquez (UNC Asheville), Cassie Gallagher (USC Upstate) and Tocarra Johnson (Winthrop).
