Big South Announces Women's Soccer Players of the Week - Aug. 18

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com– Longwood forward Sam Fischer (Charlottesville, Va.) has been named the Big South Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while UNC Asheville goalkeeper Gracie Murray (Harrisburg, N.C.) is the Defensive Player of the Week for matches played during the opening week of the regular season, it was announced today. In addition, Presbyterian College goalkeeper Febe Dombrecht (Damme, Belgium) has been selected as the Freshman of the Week.
 
Fischer opened her collegiate career with a goal in each of Longwood’s two season-opening wins. She scored her first career goal in the 45th minute of a 4-0 home victory over Alabama A&M, giving the Lancers a two-goal lead at halftime. The Charlottesville, Virginia, native added another goal in the 43rd minute on Sunday to open the scoring in a 2-1 win over American. Fischer played 84 minutes in total while putting four of her five shots on target. 
 
Murray recorded 12 saves on the week and posted her first shutout of the season in UNC Asheville’s 1-0 win at Wofford. She made six saves on 15 shots in the Bulldogs’ season opener against Miami, then matched that total on 14 shots in the clean-sheet victory over the Terriers. Murray tallied three saves in each half, including two in the final 15 minutes, and finished the week with a .923 save percentage.
 
Dombrecht opened her collegiate career with 10 saves on 17 shots against The Citadel, an effort that included eight stops in the second half to preserve a shutout. Her 10 saves are the second-most by a freshman in a single match in Presbyterian’s Division I era (since 2007) and the most by a Blue Hose goalkeeper in their first career appearance. She followed by allowing just one goal in a 2-1 win over South Carolina State, holding the Bulldogs scoreless for the final 86 minutes. Dombrecht finished the week with a .917 save percentage.
