Big South Announces Men's Soccer Players of the Week - Sept. 8

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com– Radford midfielder Hiromasa Iwai (Osaka, Japan) has been named the Big South Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Gardner-Webb goalkeeper Alan Horrocks (Merlo, San Luis, Argentina) is the Defensive Player of the Week for matches played Sept. 1-7, it was announced today. In addition, UNC Asheville forward Arnor Hardarson (Kopavogur, Iceland) and Presbyterian College midfielder Aloni Elfu (Kristiansand, Norway) have been selected as the Co-Freshmen of the Week.
 
Iwai factored into all three Radford goals in a 3-0 win over Howard, the Highlanders’ first victory since 2023. The junior assisted on scores in the 22nd and 54th minutes before adding his first goal of the season in the 71st to extend the lead. Iwai finished with three shots, including two on goal, while playing all 90 minutes against the Bison.
 
Horrocks recorded back-to-back shutouts in wins over No. 6 West Virginia and ETSU to keep the Runnin’ Bulldogs undefeated at 5-0. The senior made three saves on eight shots in Wednesday’s 1-0 road win over the Mountaineers, including two in the first half and another in the 82nd minute to preserve the lead. He also added one save on four shots faced in Sunday’s 3-0 home victory over ETSU. Horrocks played all 180 minutes in goal in two matches.
 
Hardarson scored his first two career goals in the second half to lead UNC Asheville to a 3-1 win over Bellarmine. The freshman broke a 1-1 tie in the 68th minute with the eventual game-winner, then added an insurance goal with 45 seconds remaining. He finished with two goals on two shots in 66 minutes of action.
 
Elfu contributed to both goals in Presbyterian’s 2-0 win at Coastal Carolina on Friday. The newcomer scored the game-winner in the 46th minute and later added an assist with 25 seconds remaining to seal the win for PC. Elfu finished with three points on one shot in 51 minutes, marking his second straight match with one goal and one assist.
