Big South Announces Women's Soccer Players of the Week - Sept. 8

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com– USC Upstate forward Liana Bryant (Grand Junction, Colo.) has been named the Big South Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Longwood goalkeeper Madie Wessel (Sewell, N.J.) is the Defensive Player of the Week for matches played Aug. 31-Sept. 6, it was announced today. In addition, UNC Asheville goalkeeper London Phoenix (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) has been selected as the Freshman of the Week.
 
Bryant scored a brace in USC Upstate’s 3-1 win at Wofford and totaled five points on the week. The senior opened the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 34th minute before striking again in the 55th minute to put the Spartans ahead 2-0. Her second goal proved to be the game-winner as Upstate secured the road victory Thursday, 3-1. Bryant then added an assist in the 60th minute against Eastern Kentucky on Sunday, setting up the Spartans’ lone goal of the match. She put all four of her shots on target while playing 153 minutes on the week.
 
Wessel made her first two career starts in goal for Longwood, recording a shutout in each match. The junior made six saves in a scoreless draw at Richmond on Thursday, including five after halftime. She followed with her second straight clean sheet and first career win in goal Sunday, helping the Lancers defeat Hampton, 1-0, at home. Wessel finished the week with a perfect 1.000 save percentage on 11 shots faced while playing all 180 minutes between the posts.
 
Phoenix totaled 19 saves across two matches for UNC Asheville, including a career-high 14 stops at Clemson. The freshman opened the week with five saves in a 1-1 draw against The Citadel, which marked a career high at the time. Phoenix nearly tripled that total against Clemson, making 14 saves as the Bulldogs limited the Tigers to three goals despite facing 29 shots. She played all 180 minutes in goal and finished the week with a .826 save percentage on 39 shots faced.
